Airlangga University

Airlangga University history begins forerunner educational institutions Nederlands Indische Artsen School (NIAS) and the School Tot Opleiding van Indische Tandartsen (STOVIT), each of which was founded by the Dutch in 1913 and 1928. After the independence struggle was disrupted smoothness, in 1948 the Dutch government set up a branch Tandheelkunding Instituut Universiteit van Indonesie Jakarta and reopen NIAS by name Faculteit der Geneeskunde who is also a branch of the Universiteit van Indonesie Jakarta.


The Government of the Republic of Indonesia was officially opened Airlangga University which is the first higher education institution in the eastern region of Indonesia - in 1954. The inauguration of the University of Airlangga made by the first President, Dr. Ir. Soekarno, which coincides with the commemoration of Heroes Day 9th, November 10, 1954. Legally establishment stipulated by Government Regulation No. 57/1954.

At the time inaugurated Airlangga University consists of five faculties, namely:

Medical School;
Faculty of Dentistry, which was originally a branch of the University of Indonesia;
Faculty of Law, which was originally a branch of the University of Gadjah Mada;
Faculty of Letters, based in Denpasar, which in 1962 split the faculty of the University of Airlangga to be part of the Udayana University;
The Faculty of Education, based in Malang, and in 1963 broke away from Airlangga University became the Institute of Teacher Training and Education (Teachers' Training College) Malang, which has now been transformed into the State University of Malang (UM).

Since its founding, the University of Airlangga continues to develop, among other things by giving birth to new faculties. Successively born faculties are:

Faculty of Economics and Business, established in 1961 from the College of Economics Surabaya;
Faculty of Pharmacy, established in 1963;
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, established in 1972 originating from UB;
Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, established in 1977;
Faculty of Science and Technology, established in 1982, formerly known as the Faculty of Mathematics and Science;
Non-degree Faculty of Health, is the development of Education Expert Laboratories (Palk). In 1993 the institute was closed and integrated at several faculty, based on the type of program of study;
Faculty of Graduate Studies, established in 1982, then in 1991 turned into the Graduate Program;
Faculty of Psychology, established in 1993, is the development of Psychology Studies Program at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences;
Faculty of Public Health, established in 1993, is the development of Science Program in Public Health at the School of Medicine;
Faculty of Arts, established in 1998, which is the development of Indonesian Literature Studies and English Literature Study Program at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences and starting in 2008 changed its name to the Faculty of Humanities;
Faculty of Nursing, established in 2008, is the development of Nursing Science Program in the Faculty of Medicine;
Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Resources, established in 2008, is the development of the Aquaculture Program at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

The development indicates that the presence and the pursuit of Airlangga University accepted, appreciated and needed by society. The development is currently ongoing, among others, with the opening of study programs, the enhancement and development of fields and strata of education there, so this time the University of Airlangga with thirteen faculties and one graduate program and has 127 program (Prodi) of various levels, including academic programs, vocational, and specialists, who are able to serve more than 20,000 students.
